Stunning Views over Montmartre at Coeur Sacré, Paris

Do you prefer a refreshing drink on an outdoor terrace facing Sacré Coeur,  or a seat on a cozy rooftop patio with views of the sunset and the Eiffel Tower? At Coeur Sacré, the choice is yours!

With beautiful views over the roofs of Montmartre, the new rooftop at Coeur Sacré is the perfect new venue to enjoy your next summer Apéro. The sunny summer weather allowed all of us to catch clear views all the way to the Eiffel Tower as the sun set.  It was wonderful to see everyone dressed in their Apéro best enjoying refreshing cocktails on both the rooftop patio and wrap around terrace.

A special thank you is in order for the amazing team at Coeur Sacré for welcoming all 100+ members of the Apéros Frenchies community on Thursday July 29! We hope you all enjoyed photography from the incredible Andy Sama, and of course Le Carre de Lumiere with their Photo Booth.

Not to be confused with the “Basilica of the Sacred Heart” aka Sacré Coeur, the Coeur Sacré opened in May 2021 as a Concept store – Coffee Shop – Rooftop space. With the sunny summer weather, we enjoyed views clear to the Eiffel Tower as the sun set from the upstairs Rooftop Montmartre.

After sunset, the party got started with the help of  DJ chiefP as the whole room turned into a dance floor. If you missed us last time, no worries! Did you miss out on last weeks event? Apéros Frenchies will be at the Coeur Sacré on August 12 and August 19 to end the summer rooftop season off right. Reserve your tickets now, or if you are a member, keep on eye on your inbox for your exclusive invitation.

Kickback and Relax at Le Grande Bleu Bastille, Paris

Paris is famous for many things: its delicious gastronomy, its beautiful architecture, and of course its terraces! Le Grande Bleu bar and restaurant takes advantage of all of these things and more from its cozy spot on the banks of the Bassin D’Arsenal.

What better place to hold our long awaited first event back in Paris after the closures.

With it’s sunny rooftop area, indoor bar w/dj, and lively ground floor Biergarten,  there was plenty of space to reconnect with all new and returning members. We were also more than happy to welcome back our longterm collaborator La Carre De Lumiere! Quite a few of you took advantage of their awesome photo booth to print out some memories.

Don’t worry if you missed out on this event, you can catch us at Le Grande Bleu again on 4 August 2021. Make sure to reserve your ticket now!  Until then stay up to date on everything Aperos Frenchies on Facebook and Instagram. We have some *very* exciting things planned with the reopening of bars and restaurants globally, and we are looking forward to welcoming our entire international community back soon.

Until then, cheers!

A Get Away in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Who hasn’t thought of leaving everything behind for a week, a month.. or even forever? 🙂We know the lack of social interaction and working from our living room has affected all of us. Let us brighten your day, and come along to the Canary island of Fuerteventura!  We found the best places to stay, and selected our favorite restaurants so you have no excuses.  It’s time to take a breath and get to know this paradise!

  • Situation in Fuerteventura:

It’s important to note that although The Canary Islands are part of Spain, each island can set their own rules regarding with COVID-19. To gain entry to the island visitors need a negative PCR test less than 72 hours oldThe Airport is around 30 minutes driving from the main city of Corralejo. Car rentals are the cheapest option, as a simple cab ride can cost visitors 60€ just to reach the main city! Happily, once you’ve taken the precautions and verified the rules, you can enjoy the open restaurants and bars.

We recommend you to stay in Corralejo which is the main city of the Island and where there is all the nightlife. Be aware however that that are still some limitations: bars are only  open until midnight and seatings are limited to a maximum of 10 per table.

When you’re not enjoying the nightlife or grabbing a meal there are plenty of other activities to enjoy on the island. Many of the coworking spaces and gym facilities are also open, just in case you need a quiet space to catch up on emails or get a quick session in.

  • What to see in Fuerteventura:

> North island:

 – Corralejo has the best beaches on Fuerteventura, with fine, white sand and turquoise waters

– Corralejo Natural Park (Corralejo) is one of the essential places to visit in Fuerteventura. Be sure to stop by around sunset to grab some seriously impressive photos.

– Calderón Hondo volcano.  It will take you about an hour to complete the moderately difficult route.

– El Cotillo, The most popular beach in Cotillo is La Concha beach, which stands out for its fine white sand horseshoe shape. With limited the waves, its the perfect seabed for snorkeling.

– Our favorite the is Playa Esquinzo,  well known from the surfers!  bring some beers, some aperitif  and enjoy a breathtaking sunset!

Sotavento beach ©Fun and Fly

> South Island:

It’s really easy to reach the south with a car within 2 hours from Corralejo. However, to really enjoy it we recommend you stay for a few days!

The innside by melia, is our number 1 recommendation without hesitation. Directly located on the Jandia Natural Park and Sotavento beach, it’s the perfect place for both Wind sport lovers, but also for the one who needs to just relax and disconnect!

The hotel offers a breathtaking view on both the lagoon and the Natural park. And you can enjoy  the  view directly from  their infinity pool and with one Piña colada (Obviously 😉 )

– With white, fine sand, no facilities, and no crowds, Sotavento beach ( Cossta calma)  is ideal for those who want some privacy. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of Fuerteventura.

– The René Egli kitesurf center  (located just steps from the Innside by Melia hotel) offers classes but also all the equipment required to rent! No need to bring from home or Corralejo they’ve got your back!

– Cofete beach : A  must-see, the most beautiful beach of the island!!  It is difficult to get there and the locals recommend you drive a 4WD to make it there comfortably. Make sure you have a car that cans handle the journey or risk literally getting stuck in paradise! 😉

How to: Make a Gin Basil Smash at Home!

Reading, working out, and cooking… a lot of us have discovered some new skills during this lockdown. Even if your days are similar, your Apéro beverage doesn’t have to be! It’s time to try new evening saveurs and allow your mind to escape to warmer days, with this Gin Basil Smash tutorial ..

If you’re an unofficial card-carrying member of the Apéros Frenchies crew, we can safely assume you do not need a refresher on the definition of L’Apéro.

If you need a remember of what is an Apéro, it’s time to check out our dedicated  article : But Wait! What even is an ‘Apéro’…?, we explain everything about it!  Now let’s come back to our lockdown routine, where we all miss our local bars, our favorite cocktails but most of all those incredible moments we shared with our friends, colleagues or family while siping a  good fresh drink…

Feeling nostalgic now? Here we go!  But hey, that wasn’t the point, we just want keep it positive. If this lockdown showed us how to improve our cooking, DIY skills or even work out skills, we can also most probably start to learn some bartending skills isn’t it?

This is why, after asking you on Instagram, which cocktail do you miss the most,  we selected for you a special one to do at home with only few ingredients : The Gin Basil Smash!

This has got to be one of my favorite cocktails and it’s all thanks to Jörg Meyer who owns Le Lion in Hamburg. Jörg created this masterpiece back in 2008 after being inspired by the Whisky Smash. The Gin Basil Smash is basically an alternative take on the gin mojito that swaps the mint for muddled basil, but it’s definitely in a league of its own.

What do you need?

– 50ml of Citadelle Gin

– 1 bunch basil leaves (if in doubt as to how much, go heavy on the basil)

– 20ml fresh lemon juice

– 15ml sugar syrup (optional)

– Ice cubes

Cocktail shaker (or thermos)

_________________

1- Place basil and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker (you can also use a thermos if you don’t have any shaker)

2- Squizz 20ml of lemons

3- Gently muddle the lemon and basil “smashing” the ingredients into the shaker.

4- Add  60 ml of Citadelle gin and top up with ice

5- Shake vigorously

6-  Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.

7- Garnish with basil leaves and flowers

Et voilà ! Santé! Don’t hesitate to share your creation with us on Instagram @aperos_frenchies!

You can fin our video on our IGTV !

Drink responsibly.

5 Tips to Handle Those Expat Blues

The expat blues are probably at the epicenter of peoples worries when moving abroad. However, at least in our opinion, this is still seen as a taboo that nobody really wants to bring up. As usual, Apéros Frenchies has your back!  today, I decided to share some top tips with you guys based on my experience regarding this incredible but also not easy journey of being an expat.  Hopefully these tips to handles those expat blues will help you to get through this difficult time!

We often move to a new country by ourselves and most often for a job opportunity. We say goodbye to our family, our friends and we jump into a new adventure not knowing exactly how long it will last. But keep in mind that this is an exciting feeling and that’s the reason why we are doing it after all, embrace the adventure and keep in mind that expat blues is part of the journey!

1 – Open your heart to a new relationship

Have you ever noticed that people are usually more open minded in your new adopted country than back home? The expat syndrome is contagious!

When we live abroad, we usually leave everyone behind and start a new life. We don’t have our family, our best mates or ex classmates to hang out with anymore. It’s hard to socialise and make real connections. So, if you don’t take this opportunity to open your heart to unknown people, you can possibly end up by yourself at home feeling this expat blues. (And this is probably not what you are looking for! 😉

Why not go for some drinks with your colleagues afterwork and take this opportunity to build relationships. You can break the ice by asking some simple questions such as if they already lived abroad or moved to another city. It helps to break the ice and maybe you will find some common points to chat about. The main thing is that you put yourself out there and make an effort, trust me, you won’t regret it! Who knows, maybe you will meet your best mate or long-time partner in the process 🙂

2 – Try to socialise as much as possible

Yes, I know, it’s easy to say and especially during this lockdown time where we’d rather be tucked up and cosy at home.. but don’t be lazy, take this chance and remember that we always meet people for a reason!  Why not ask this easy-going friend to go for a walk / run or to grab a coffee outside and tell him/her to bring a friend or two?

Never underestimate this spontaneous catch up, because sometimes that is how you make the best – unexpected – connections!  By the way, we often say in French “Les amis de mes amis sont mes amis” (My friends’ friends are my friends). Get it?

3 – Use social networks

I have seen many times in the different countries/cities I have livedin, people posting in expat groups asking to meet new friends. It takes courage to do it, but I am pretty sure that most of them met some cool people to hang out with or good friends, you have nothing to lose!

Don’t be ashamed to ask, there is absolutely no shame in this! we all went through it and most people would appreciate it because they are probably feeling the same way but are too afraid to take the initiative!

Even though I personally don’t use Facebook that much anymore it is a great network to share these kind of experiences and to join expat groups in your new city (or just our Apéros Frenchies’ page 😉 )

4 –  Exercise the language part of your brain!

What’s worse than living in a country where we don’t speak the language? Living in our bubble doesn’t help much either when trying to integrate! Although some languages can be more attractive than others, you really have to force yourself to learn. Believe me, I’ve been living in Germany long enough without speaking German to understand the struggle. 😉 It took me almost 3 years to start pushing myself to learn. I personally used an online platform :  Babbel and I would recommend it to everyone. It’s easy, playful, and best of all, at your fingertips, online! It really helped me to warm to German and broke down lots of barriers to the language! ;’)

Learn a new language with Babbel

5 – Organise small events at home

Due to the pandemic, the restrictions are different depending on the country you live in. However, if we cannot meet in restaurants or bars, generally you are still allowed to invite friends over (check the restrictions regarding your country).

I realized that despite this lack of social life/ crazy nights, we’ve been forced to focus on what’s real and it is important. Yes, Friday night fever is cool but what about a nice diner and good wine at home with great people? You can have some good chats, and even learn new things about your friends, such as musical ability!

For instance, it might be a nice idea to prepare a special dish from your country so that your friends can also try something new, this is the core of expat life and experience! Friends are always happy to discover new cultures! Also, don’t hesitate to check out our article  Apéro at Home – Plan the Perfect Apéro!  If, you are running out of time, we definitely advise you to have a look at this website!  HelloFresh delivers great recipes and fresh ingredients to your home each week!

Don’t worry, if cooking is not one of your best skills, you can still order food from your local restaurant  using the handy app and keep it easy!

Anyway, use this opportunity to ask friends about their feelings and how they handle their expat blues. You’d be surprised when you ask this question that you won’t be the only one who has mixed feelings! 😉

6 – Zoom Apéro from Apéros Frenchies

You probably know about us because you’ve been to our networking events, right? Or maybe someone told you to come! I will soon talk soon about the reasons that drove me to build Apéros Frenchies and organise those events. However, unfortunately, we cannot organise events right now but some of you asked us about some digital Apéros to connect all of you guys!

We have already done it a few times and we had a lot of fun! Let us know it is something you would like to do again!

BONUS Treat yourself! (One of my personal favourites)

Who said we couldn’t buy happiness? It’s true that happiness does not comprise of an online order, but it can contribute! (Raise your hand if you agree!)

Have a look at it, find your perle rare, add it to your Christmas Wishlist and enjoy!

Let’s keep that secret for now but believe us.. we couldn’t resist for too long! Firstly,  each product is wrapped in a bold coloured packaging designed and signed by different artists. Secondly, tender milk, dark & salt, milk with salted caramel, crispy milk and dark with cocoa nibs, no doubt that we found at least one taste to please our papilles!    Verdict : we recommend le chocolat de français 100%!
